Organisation and Objectives
The KRdL was founded in March 1990 and is located in Düsseldorf. It is a joint committee of VDI (Association of German Engineers) and DIN (German Institute for Standardisation). It is the successor of the VDI Commission on Air Pollution Prevention (VDI-Kommission Reinhaltung der Luft) founded in 1957 and the Standards Committee on Air Pollution Control of DIN (Normenausschuß Luftreinhaltung im DIN). This new Commission holds the secretariats of both ISO/TC 146 „Air Quality“ and CEN/TC 264 „Air Quality“.
The KRdL consists of more than 180 committees and working groups in which more than 1,350 experts from the fields of industry, science and administration work on a honorary basis. The Commission works by order of the Federal Minister of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, and is supported financially.
The KRdL is responsible for the preparation of VDI guidelines and DIN standards which address the problem of air pollution and provide means of prevention. Furthermore, it assists in elaborating preliminary and final DIN/EN and DIN/ISO standards. It plays a major national, European and international role in the preparation of technical rules for air pollution control.
